How We Care For The Environment At Ord House Country Park

21 Jun 2022

At Maguires Country Parks, we strive to care for our environment in any way possible. On operating our static caravans and holiday homes in Northumberland, County Durham, and North Yorkshire; considering the planet is an important part of what we do.

These days, it’s safe to say that the environment could do with some extra love and attention. As day-to-day life passes us by, we often forget that there’s more we can be doing to make sustainable changes and prevent further harm to the world around us.

Wherever possible, we make it a priority to consider environmental alternatives and take preventative measures to keep our wonderful planet ticking over!

Here are the ways we look after the environment at our holiday park in Northumberland – Ord House Country Park.

Resource conservation

At Ord House Country Park we monitor energy use closely and have switched over to low, LED light bulbs where appropriate. We also have solar panels fitted onto our toilet blocks to heat water and all old boilers have been replaced with new, more energy-efficient ones.

Recently we have posted ‘switch off’ signs around our staff and public areas to encourage less energy use where it’s not required and much of our lighting is controlled by motion sensors or timers to eliminate unnecessary use as well.

At Ord House, we are also committed to recycling and aim to recycle paper, cardboard, bottles, cans, and batteries.

Ecological management

We also take ecological management seriously at Maguires Country Parks. Our park is well vegetated with nectar-rich plants, trees, and shrubs and has a range of cut and uncut grass to encourage a diverse range of habitats within our parks.

However, there is a range of artificial habitats throughout our luxury holiday park in Northumberland, including bird boxes, bee hotels, bat boxes, hedgehog houses, and beetle banks. At Ord House Country Park, we also have our own local bat colony.

We believe that it is important to educate the next generation on wildlife and the environment, which is why we offer a range of suitable activities to get them involved.

As well as this, we sell wildflower seeds in reception to encourage those looking for lodges for sale in Northumberland or seasonal touring opportunities to think about supporting wildlife when they leave the park.

Honey Bee Friendly Park Project

At Ord House Country Park, we started small and continue to do more each year to promote this fantastic cause.

Year-round we provide flowering plants for bees and ensure that we plant during every season. Our uncut wildflowers on our Nature Walk and our specially-made wildflower bed are perfect feeding areas for our local bees.

It is important that we spread the word, so we have produced a ‘Kids Pack’ which is available from our Tourist Information section to educate kids on some fun facts about bees. You will also find display signs around the park to explain what we are doing for the local bees.

Our park features bee hotels to help them lay their eggs as well as an area of undisturbed ‘rough’ land to encourage the bees to nest.
