3 Forests You Need To Visit in North Yorkshire

01 Sep 2023

North Yorkshire is home to many hidden gems and best-kept secrets. If you are planning an upcoming trip away to your holiday home at Maguires Country Parks, exploring the nature-filled forests and woodland should be at the very top of your to-do list.

The North York Moors is a beautiful day out for hiking enthusiasts or those who enjoy a peaceful dog walk with surrounding vistas that will mesmerise. With so much to see and explore, you might be wondering which parts to turn your attention to first.

With that in mind, we’re going to uncover the best forests and woodlands in North Yorkshire that can easily be reached from Swainby Country Park and Swaleside Country Park.

Dalby (The Great Yorkshire Forest)

Dalby Forest is renowned for its running trails and mountain biking routes but there is also a GoApe Treetop Adventure to discover as well as segway forest trails, paintballing and many enjoyable family strolls along the way.

For cycling enthusiasts, there are 70 miles of trails to make the most of or if you prefer a less challenging day out why not bring your four-legged friend along to join you for a walk? With trails of varying distances and difficulties, there is something for everyone at Dalby Forest.

If you are travelling with the kids, there is plenty to keep a smile on their face! They can learn about the minibeasts of the forest by following the Superworm activity trail, or Hiddens Horizons offer plenty of child-friendly, interactive experiences too.

Stargazing is also a possibility at Dalby Forest. Find your own space and marvel at the mesmerising dark skies to discover bright stars at this official Dark Sky Discovery Site.

Garbutt Wood

Garbutt Wood is a stunning area of woodland that often reminds us of the wildwoods that once covered the North York Moors thousands of years ago.

Home to many breeding birds, flowering plants and oak and birch woodland; it is nothing short of an impressive nature reserve.

This spellbinding woodland is most magical when the flowers are blooming in May and June while the songs of blackcaps, redstarts and other breeding birds create an enchanting atmosphere.

To spot an abundance of trees and wildlife, take the trail down from Sutton Bank National Park Centre. If you tip-toe quietly, you might even spot a roe deer out from hiding!

May Beck & Foss Fall

May Beck, with its dappled light and shallow waters, is a perfect day out for all the family. A lovely shady walk for summer, take the trail through the trees on a 2-mile circular route that passes an idyllic woodland tea garden for homemade cakes and pots of tea.

Take in the peaceful rushing sound of water from Foss Fall as you venture through this magic woodland and enjoy your day.

We have amazing opportunities for holiday home ownership at Swainby Country Park and Swaleside Country Park in North Yorkshire.
