5 Summer Activities To Try At Your Park

11 Aug 2021

Are you looking for a lovely day out near one of our parks? Well, we’ve got you covered! We’ve created a list of some of our favourite summer activities that are perfect for a day trip with the whole family. From feeding meerkats to exploring the medieval Raby Castle, there really is something for everyone.

To save any disappointment on these trips, we recommend that you book them all in advance.

River Tweed boat trip

First up, we’ve picked a brilliant day out to Berwick-upon-Tweed to take a boat tour across the River Tweed, courtesy of Berwick Boat Trips.

Take a trip along the River Tweed or out to the North Sea, where you can view breathtaking scenery and wildlife. You may be lucky enough to spot some dolphins!

Berwick Boat Trips is around a 10-minute drive from Ord House and a 30-minute drive from The Kaims, making it ideal for a day out.

Whitehouse Farm Centre

Next, we have a family favourite near Forget Me Not.

Whitehouse Farm Centre is great for you and the little ones, where you can meet some fantastic animals. From meerkats to snakes, they have it all!

Additionally, the centre has an adventure playground, tractor rides and much more, so you can be sure the kids will love it.

Whitehouse Farm Centre is a 20-minute drive from our Forget Me Not Country Park, and it is essential to book a ticket before you visit.

Raby Castle

If you are visiting Newbus Grange, you are lucky to have one of England’s finest medieval castles nearby.

Raby Castle is one of the most impressive castles in the North of England and was built all the way back in the 14th century. You can discover the fascinating castle artefacts and explore the 200 acres of lush green parkland surrounding the castle. They’ve also got the kids covered with a brilliant Woodland Adventure Playground.

At roughly a 30-minute drive from our Newbus Grange Country Park, this is a perfect day out for all ages.

Fruit picking in the great outdoors

Get out in the summer sun and pick some fresh seasonal fruits at Spilmans Farm. You can pick a range of fruit such as strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, the perfect healthy snack.

The farm is just under a 15-minute drive from Swaleside and a 25-minute drive from Swainby, so there is no reason not to give this a go!

Lindisfarne Castle

Lindisfarne Castle is an extremely unique castle that is located on the tidal island of ‘Holy Island’.

You can explore the castle’s exhibitions, take in the picturesque views from the Upper Battery of the castle, or enjoy a lovely picnic on the castle grounds.

It is around a 30-minute drive from both Ord House and The Kaims, making it a must for if you are at one of these parks.

Booking in advance is required, and because the castle is on a tidal island, careful planning is needed to check the safe crossing times before booking your ticket. Don’t let this put you off though, as this is truly a one of a kind experience!
