For anyone who loves a challenge, High Force isn’t just a spectacular waterfall, it’s also a brilliant spot for rock climbing and abseiling experiences. The surrounding Pennine landscape offers both beginner-friendly and more technical climbs, with guided sessions available from local adventure companies. Even if you’re not scaling the rocks yourself, it’s worth the visit just to see the power of the falls up close, surrounded by lush woodland and the sound of rushing water. Don’t forget to pack your camera and maybe a change of socks if you fancy a paddle afterwards!
Glide your way through the peaceful Tees Valley on a canoe or kayak and see County Durham from a whole new perspective. There are plenty of launch points along the River Tees, and local outdoor centres like those in Barnard Castle and Teesdale offer lessons and equipment hire. The stretch near Gainford is calm and ideal for families or beginners, while more confident paddlers can head for the Tees Barrage International White Water Centre for an adrenaline rush. Keep an eye out for herons and kingfishers – they’re often spotted along the banks!
